Nissan Skyline R31

Nissan Skyline R31

The R31 Skyline introduced many new technologies and features. The HR31 was the first Skyline to be equipped with the new RB-series of engines. The R31 RB engines are often referred to as "Red Top" engines because of the red cam covers. There were three variants. The earliest series of DOHC RB engines used the NICS (Nissan Induction Control System) injection system with 12 very small intake runners, and a butterfly system to divide the intake ports in half for better low RPM performance. Later versions used ECCS (Electronically Concentrated Control System) engine management, discarded the twelve tiny runners for six much larger ones (though they retained twelve ports on the head, so there was a splitter plate), and received a slightly larger turbocharger. Nissan's RD28, a 2.8 straight-6 engine, featured for a diesel option. Another technological first for the R31 was the introduction of Nissan's proprietary 4-wheel steering system, dubbed HICAS (High Capacity Active Steering). The R31 series were also the only models in the Skyline family to feature a 4-door hardtop variation. These models were generally badged as the Passage GT.

Importing Procedures for Cars Over 25 Years Old

In the United States vehicles over twenty five years old are Department of Transportation (DOT) exempt from meeting federal motor vehicle safety standards(FMVSS).  At over twenty one years old cars are Environmental Protection Agency(EPA) exempt.  To meet California smog exemption requirements, the car must be older than 1976. To have a newer car meet California requirements, it is more expensive, and sometimes very difficult to comply.

There are thousands of cars daily available at auction.   Only a few of these cars are eligible for import to the US, but an example of eligible cars are below.

1975 Toyota Celica
1975 Toyota Celica. The auction starts at 100,000 yen or about $1200.  Twin cam, wing mirrors, all good stuff.
1981 Landcruiser Diesel
1981 Toyota Landcruiser.  This 4wd diesel landcruiser is a fairly rare sight in the US. Diesels of this vintage are smog exempt in California.

Australian Ford Falcon. Since 1960

The Ford Falcon is a full-size car which has been manufactured by Ford Australia since 1960. Each model from the XA series of 1972 onward has been designed, developed and built in Australia, following the phasing out of the American Falcon of 1960-70 which had been re-engineered locally for the harsher Australian conditions. As a result of the longevity of its Australian production, the Falcon is one of the biggest selling names in world automotive history, selling over 3,000,000 in six generations to 2003, almost exclusively in Australia and New Zealand.[1] As of July 2007, Ford sells upwards of 3,000 units per month.[2]

Ford has manufactured over three million units since 1960, and has topped the sales charts in Australia on many occasions. Currently the Falcon line-up is offered in sedan, station wagon, and utility body styles, however in the past panel vans and hardtops (coupe) were offered.[3] Australian made Ford Falcons and Holden Commodores dominate the ranks of taxis in Australia and New Zealand and are also used as police patrol cars.
